Patterson Pass – Flynn Circuit [Lemond Ti]

Posted by britcpower on December 31, 2010

The weather is still unusually cool for California so I wrapped up warm and headed out for a lap of the Altamont – Patterson pass circuit (Patterson Pass road race circuit) on my trusty Lemond. I had forgotten how nice a titanium bike feels but an icy headwind on the Altamont spoiled the fun. Fortunately this meant that there was a tailwind up Patterson Pass but this started to shift to an icy crosswind near the top.

By the time I got to the Flynn climb I was really cold and the headwind up Flynn cut through you like as knife. It was really nasty and I struggled to climb it. The descent afterwards wasn’t much better as I was very cold  and the wind was nasty.  I was really glad to get home to a nice warm bath.

Cross Road CCT (DaVinci Tandem)

Posted by britcpower on December 30, 2010

Just did a steady short recovery ride today on the tandem. It was really cold and windy again, especially on Patterson Pass.  Feeling a bit tired.

Bakery Ride [TREK 5500]

Posted by britcpower on December 29, 2010

Back onto a regular bike for a chilly bakery ride out of Danville. It was very subdued until we approached Sunol and then things hotted up. The roads were really dirty especially on the little rise before Sunol and the group suffered a couple of flats.  Happy valley was very wet and dirty and there was a nasty cold wind getting up so the pace kept sedate. Once we got onto Vineyard with a tail wind all hell broke loose and the pace went very fast (race pace I reckon). I held on to the lead pack  but it was pretty hard.

The next section along Isabel had a stonking cross wind and the pace was also pretty high. It wasn’t much fun at all. Collier canyon also had a nasty headwind and it started raining at the top.  The ride back into Danville was cold, very windy and miserable. Not a very fun ride today.

Danville Peet’s, Tandem [DaVinci 700 Tandem]

Posted by britcpower on December 28, 2010

We are having a bit of a renaissance for our DaVinci tandem and went for another ride on it today. The weather was cold and overcast but we managed to get home just as the rain set in. We rode at a pretty steady pace on the way out into a nasty cold headwind and welcomed a nice cup of coffee at Peets. On the way back we wound it up a bit even getting close to race pace (visions of Berkeley TT). Definitely feeling a lot happier riding the beast.

Altamont Tandem Ride [DaVinci 700 Tandem]

Posted by britcpower on December 27, 2010

This was the second day in a row we decided to go out on the tandem. It was a bit chilly at first and it looked like rain but the wind was actually pretty good for the Altamont. It was a  good fun tandem ride but it was hard work on the climb back up the Altamont.

Ruby Hills On The Tandem [DaVinci 700 Tandem]

Posted by britcpower on December 26, 2010

I definitely over indulged on Christmas day and ended up sleeping in like a log and missed the Mount Diablo club ride. I woke up with a pulled muscle in my left shoulder which was due to my dog pulling to get to a leaf on his walk on Christmas Day. I  felt so lethargic that I only wanted to do a short easy ride so Sandra and myself dusted off the tandem for an excursion to Ruby Hills Starbucks.

It’s a while since we have ridden the Tandem but it felt familiar. We kept up a pretty good pace into the strong headwind on the way out even though I was really suffering in my left shoulder and neck.  After a refreshing cup of Coffee the ride back was much nicer and we made good use of the tailwind. I couldn’t resist  opening it up on the climb up cross road  and we rode pretty hard to a respectable time of 6m40 which is only a minute slower than my p.b.

A good fun ride.

Darryl’s Christmas Eve Ride [Trek 5500]

Posted by britcpower on December 24, 2010

I parked up in Danville then rode out to Bernal in the pitch black and patchy fog to meet my IC3 team mates for a ride out to Peet’s Coffee in Berkeley. It was pretty cool to begin with and I felt pretty rough until we got to the Redwood Road Climb where I started to breathe a bit better.  I was never really firing on all cylinders and was usually trailing in about third place up the bigger climbs. I was unable to match the pace of Ben and Stefano but I was climbing OK.

After a free coffee, holiday gingerbread and bathroom break in Berkeley I felt a lot better but was still unable to hang with Ben and Stefano on the Tunnel Road climb. This is an excellent climb that I must try again someday and I got a 4th overall on Strava for it. The rest of the way home was brisk with the odd sprint for signposts but we were slowed a little by a flat near Dublin. I felt pretty good at the finish and really enjoyed the ride. I am not sure why I didnt feel so good all day but I think the early morning had something to do with it.

Copperopolis RR course [jake The Snake]

Posted by britcpower on December 23, 2010

Sandra and myself decided to head up to Copperopolis to do a reccy of the road race course on a sunny December morning. We were expecting damp roads so we went on our Cyclo Cross Bikes with mudguards.  The course was even worse than I remember, especially the final descent before the finish which was unbelievably bad. It ended up being a pretty tiring day even though we were not pushing the pace.

Flynn Loop Clockwise [Specialized Tarmac]

Posted by britcpower on December 21, 2010

I have been off the bike for the last two days which is unusual for me as unless I am away on business I ride every day. I came down with a cold and sore throat on Friday after numerous soakings and by Sunday I felt pretty rough.  Monday I didn’t feel any better but by today I  felt well enough to get a ride in before work. As I only had an hour I decided to go for a pretty high intensity workout but my legs felt like jelly and my asthma was really playing me up on the climbs.

I Really pushed way too hard today and ended up feeling unwell for the rest of the day but at least I am back in the saddle. What was strange was that my tarmac felt all wrong and I just couldn’t get comfortable on it. It felt just like my saddle was way too low although it definitely hadn’t changed.
